3 Reasons Why Evidence Based Treatments Work

Article Contents

Evidence-based drug rehabilitation programs continue to gain attention. The primary goal of any drug rehabilitation program is abstinence – or at the very least, a significant drop in substance abuse – so relying on those treatments that have been shown to be successful because of the existing evidence helps ensure that this goal is met.

1. It Can Improve Financial Stability

A treatment for substance abuse that focuses on rewarding an individual for their continued abstinence for the substance provides the incentive to stay drug-free.

This approach requires that the participant consent to a treatment plan, agree to routine urine testing or a combination of the two. Not only can this promote responsibility on the part of the person in recovery, but it also offers them the opportunity to become independent.

2. It Gets to the Heart of the Problem

Some studies have suggested up to 50 percent of those individuals who face a substance use disorder also must deal with a co-occurring mental health condition. While mood disorders, anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are the most common co-occurring conditions, there are others that must be treated in order for recovery to be effective.

A 2006 study of addiction treatment clinical supervisors, agency directors, and clinicians found that 41 percent also had a mood disorder while 26 percent and 25 percent struggled with anxiety disorders and PTSD, respectively. Antisocial personality disorder was estimated to be present in 18 percent of individuals while both borderline personality disorder and severe mental illness co-occurred in about 17 percent of this population.

In nearly any modern drug rehabilitation program, counseling is a recommended course of action. One type is drug counseling which is designed to help the individual identify their triggers, encourage involvement with community resources and prevent relapse. This type of counseling can be held individually or within a group setting.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is another proven therapy component that has been shown to be effective in preventing relapse. One of the reasons for its success is that this type of therapy helps the individual gain improved coping and social skills that last long after substance use treatment is over. In addition, these skills transfer over into other areas of life as well.

Couples and family therapy can provide an effective platform for growth and skills attainment. Communication can be improved that can help the individuals and those who are important in their life learn how to more effectively talk to each other both verbally and non-verbally.

3. A Holistic Approach

Nothing occurs in a person’s life in a vacuum. In other words, what affects one area of a person’s life or body, affects other areas as well.

Today, there is a clearer understanding of the importance of treating the whole person via a holistic approach. Evidence-based drug rehabilitation programs emphasize the need to address a person’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health at the same time that their substance use is being treated. Only by taking this kind of approach can long-term recovery and abstinence be attained.

The use of alternative strategies, such as art therapy, adventure therapy, yoga, and meditation provide individuals with skills and goals that they can apply to other areas of their lives.
