Most individuals look forward to the holiday season with great anticipation, for a variety of reasons. Even while they may be rushing through stores and arranging get-togethers for family members and friends, most people recognize that the holiday season carries with a deep and precious emotional impact. Unfortunately, not everyone is as fortunate as those who truly enjoy the spirit of the season.
While the main spirit of the holiday season is focused around love, family, togetherness and celebrating what one has, it is also a time for giving to others who are less fortunate–especially children. It is a sad fact that there are many children across the country who simply are not fortunate enough to receive the gifts that other children normally enjoy during the holidays, and it is for this reason that the Toys for Tots Program was designed.
About Toys for Tots
The Toys for Tots Program was established and is run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. The mission of this program is to collect as many new, unwrapped toys as possible during the months of October, November and December, and then distribute these toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in communities across the nation. The goal of the program is to bring Christmas cheer into the lives of less fortunate children and deliver a message of hope to these children, so that they can rise above their current difficulties and become responsible, productive and patriotic citizens. The Toys for Tots Program recognizes that children is one of our nation’s most valuable resources, and that communities who are united in a common cause each year are thereby stronger and healthier overall.
The Toys for Tots Program is normally run in those communities where a Marine Corps Reserve Unit is located. However, other communities without a Marine Corps Reserve Unit may have the program run by a Marine Corps League Detachment or veteran Marines who have been authorized by the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to conduct a campaign in that area. It is the designated Toys for Tots Campaign Coordinators who generate interest in the program by conducting various activities throughout the year, like golf tournaments, foot races, bicycle races and other events that both increase general public awareness of the program and as well as toy and monetary donations.
Elevate’s Contribution to Toys for Tots
The Toys for Tots Program relies on generous volunteers and contributions for its success. In Santa Cruz County, California, the Watsonville and Aptos/LaSelva Fire Departments, along with Boulder Creek Fire, CAL Fire Corralitos, CAL Fire Pajaro Dunes and other partners throughout the area, have forwarded the mission of spreading Christmas cheer and building hope and self-esteem in the hearts and minds of impoverished children for twenty-seven years. All of the locally collected toys remain in and are distributed to children in the local community, which helps volunteers and donors to feel that their help and participation is very real and helpful to their immediate environment.
Elevate is proud to be one of the many contributing partners who helped to make this year’s Santa Cruz County Toys for Tots Program a great success. Elevate staff worked hard throughout the campaign and collected over five hundred toys from generous community donors, which helped the program to deliver gifts to thousands of local children–children who were smiling and hopeful during the holiday season and whose parents were immensely thankful for a gift they would’ve found impossible to deliver otherwise. It was a true community effort that helped to drive home the fact that regardless of the hardships some may struggle through, when people pull together, wonderful and hopeful things can happen
