Chico is the most populated city in Butte County, California. Chico is the economic and educational center of the northern Sacramento Valley. Home to California State University and Chico and Bidwell Parks, there are plenty of things to do in Chico.

Like other cities in Northern California, the residents of Chico can struggle with substance abuse issues. The drug-related death rate was three times higher in Butte County than California in 2016.

While other prescription medications were abused in the Chico area, there were 17 recorded deaths related to opioid overdose in Butte County in 2018.

The number of opioid-related deaths has decreased from 22 in 2016. However, this may be related to better treatment protocols rather than an improvement in overall abuse.

Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs in Chico, California

There are several substance abuse treatment programs in Chico, California. Many of them use treatment types such as:

  • detoxification
  • mental health counseling
  • inpatient and outpatient treatment programs
Why Detoxing is Necessary for Addiction Recovery

Most rehab programs will begin with a detox phase. The detoxification from addictive substances is an essential step in the recovery process. It sets the tone for further healing by resetting the body.

Some treatment centers may argue that detoxing is not required for every substance. They say that only substances that are physically addictive and produce withdrawal symptoms need a detox phase

At Elevate, we feel differently. Our clients will always take part in a detox phase before they move on to further treatment. We know that having the right frame of mind is necessary to be successful in sobriety.

Mental Health Counseling

Mental health counseling is a key component of addiction treatment. There are many different kinds of talk therapy. Examples of talk therapy include:

  • dialectical-behavioral therapy (DBT)
  • cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • motivational interviewing (MI)

Each therapy has its application and uses, but they each address substance abuse and long-term recovery strategies. Talk therapy helps individuals learn the life skills they need to remain sober after leaving treatment.

Inpatient Vs. Outpatient Treatment: Which Is Right for Me?

Inpatient and outpatient rehabs are the most common forms of addiction treatment programs. While they are equally effective at addressing addiction, some individuals may do better in residential programs than in outpatient treatment.

People considering starting an addiction treatment program will want to think about the following:

  • Have they been abusing substances regularly for six or more months?
  • Are they addicted to more than one substance?
  • Have they experienced a relapse before?
  • Is it possible they have a co-occurring mental health disorder?

Individuals who answered yes to one or more of the above questions will likely want to enroll in an inpatient treatment program. Each of the above criteria indicates that the addiction is more serious, making a more intensive program like inpatient rehab necessary.

Outpatient treatment is a good alternative if someone cannot commit to an inpatient program. Outpatient treatment programs will not be as intensive as an inpatient program because they do not require clients to live on the premises. For those who have commitments like work and children, an outpatient program may be the best option.
