San José Drug and Alcohol Addiction Rehab

San Jose Drug And Alcohol Rehab Program

San Jose, California’s third most populous city, is the central hub of the San Francisco Bay Area. Located in Santa Clara County, home to Silicon Valley, San Jose residents are not immune to substance abuse and mental health issues.

The cost of living in Santa Clara County is one of the highest in the nation. The high living costs present several challenges, including income disparities. These income disparities can influence the rate of homelessness—a risk factor for substance abuse and drug addiction.

Santa Clara County has experienced an uptick in the number of fentanyl-related overdoses over the last few years. Fentanyl-related deaths in Santa Clara County increased from 11 in 2016 to 16 in 2017. A majority of these deaths were considered accidental. Many are dying from a drug overdose because they believed they were taking different, less potent, opioids such as Oxycodone, Vicodin, or Norco.

Substance Abuse Trends in San José & Santa Clara County, California

More than 500,000 prescriptions for opioids were written in Santa Clara County in 2018. Though the rate of opioid abuse in the county has slightly decreased over the last few years, a significant number of people continue to struggle with opioid addiction, partly due to the mixing of fentanyl with other street drugs.

Santa Clara Public Health Providers report that any street drug has the potential to be laced with fentanyl or carfentanil. This includes extremely potent opioids that came to California from Mexico and China.

Frequently Abused Substances

Most commonly abused substances in San Jose include:

  • alcohol
  • marijuana
  • opioids (unsanctioned use of prescriptions)
  • cocaine
  • hallucinogens (LDC and PCP)

Prescription Drug Use

Prescription drug use has been an ongoing issue throughout the nation. Prescription drugs can include:

  • painkillers (Vicodin, OxyContin)
  • stimulants (Adderall and Ritalin)
  • sedatives and depressants (Valium, Xanax, Ambien, Lunesta)

In Santa Clara County, painkillers accounted for 65 percent of prescription drug abuse; sedatives and depressants 37 percent; and stimulants 31 percent. Those 30 to 40 years old were found to be more likely than other age group to misuse prescription drugs or over the counter medications more than once.

Drug and Alcohol Rehab Types in San José

As the population in San Jose slowly increases at an average of one percent a year, more drug and alcohol treatment options become available. Individuals in the San Jose area will have access to treatment for most substances, including opioids, alcohol, marijuana, and methamphetamines.

To begin treatment for any addiction, individuals will likely need to decide between an inpatient program, sometimes referred to as a residential treatment program, or an outpatient treatment program. Both treatment types have been shown to be equally effective in addressing addiction issues, and they are often used in conjunction with each other.

Inpatient addiction treatment requires the individual to live at the rehab center while completing their treatment. This type of program can be more beneficial to people who have more severe addiction issues, such as addiction to more than one substance or a co-occurring mental health disorder.

Outpatient addiction treatment permits the individual to live at home and continue working while completing treatment. And usually consists of a few evening meetings each week. Outpatient rehab programs give much more autonomy than inpatient rehab programs and should be considered with great care to avoid relapse from drug addiction.
