Santa Clara Drug and Alcohol Rehab

Santa Clara Drug And Alcohol Rehab Program

Located on the San Francisco Bay’s southern coast, Santa Clara is the ninth-most populated city in the area. Roughly 45 miles west of San Jose, Santa Clara has a lot to offer. Sadly, many people in Santa Clara struggle with substance abuse. In 2018, 60 people died from an opioid-related overdose in Santa Clara County.

Alcohol Abuse in Santa Clara & Santa Clara County, California

Alcohol remains the most frequently abused substance in Santa Clara. About 67 percent of adults 18 and older reported consuming alcohol in the last month. Additionally, 82 percent of adults who reported drinking in the previous month indicated they had also participated in heavy drinking.

Prescription Drug Abuse in Santa Clara and Central Counties

Abusing prescription medication has become an issue in the Santa Clara Community. Prescription medications include:

  • pain relievers (Vicodin or OxyContin)
  • stimulants (Adderall or Ritalin)
  • sedatives or depressants (Valium, Xanax, Ambien, Lunesta)

A local survey found that individuals in Santa Clara County reported abusing prescription drugs in one of three ways:

  • using prescription medications in an unsanctioned way (21 percent)
  • taking prescription drugs that were not prescribed to them (20 percent)
  • abusing over the counter medications OTC (11 percent)

The Changing Opioid Epidemic in Santa Clara

Santa Clara County has seen a decrease in prescription opioid abuse over the past few years. In 2016, the county reported 78 deaths related to opioid abuse, and in 2018 that number decreased to 60 deaths.

Though this is promising, local law enforcement says that the county has seen an uptick in fentanyl-related overdose deaths, and they don’t think they will slow down anytime soon.

Fentanyl’s Role in the Epidemic

In 2019 more than 11 deaths related to fentanyl were reported in Santa Clara. Fentanyl is a synthetic, or man-made, opioid that can be 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine.

This drug is particularly dangerous because it is being cut with other substances commonly bought on the street. Fentanyl will make the impact of consuming the other drug feel more potent. Many people believe they are taking another drug, and end up unknowingly overdosing on fentanyl.

Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs in Santa Clara, California

Since Santa Clara is a densely populated area, there are many options for drug and alcohol treatment programs in the area. However, having too many options to choose from can be overwhelming and may even deter some people from finding a program that will work for them.

Here are some factors to consider if you or your loved one is considering addiction treatment:

  • how long have they struggled with substance abuse
  • if they have experienced a relapse in the past
  • the number of substances they are addicted to
  • if they have a co-occurring mental health disorder

All of these factors are capable of derailing recovery efforts and can make treatment more complex.

Length of Substance Abuse and Its Role in Relapse

Someone who has been abusing substances for more than six months will often struggle to quit using on their own. In many cases, individuals who attempt to stop on their own will suffer a relapse where they begin using again.

If this sounds like your situation, you are not alone. In this situation, it is best to reach out to a rehab center to receive the support you need to accomplish your recovery goals. Stopping substance abuse after it has been an ingrained habit is difficult but not impossible, and is made even easier when coupled with a good and knowledgeable recovery process.

How Detoxification and Mental Health Can Influence Recovery

When someone abuses more than one substance at a time, it can cause drastic changes in a short amount of time. If they choose to enroll in addiction treatment, they will start in a detox phase. Detoxing is the first step in treatment and is a requirement for those who may be on multiple drugs at once.

How Professionals Can Help with Detox

The safest way to come off of more than one substance is to seek professional help. Many substances can cause adverse withdrawal symptoms that can range from mildly uncomfortable to potentially life threatening.

Medical professionals will be better equipped to deal with these symptoms, should they arise, and ensure you comfort in the process.

A Dual Diagnosis: Mental Health and Addiction

Often, people with substance abuse issues will also struggle with mental health disorders such as major depressive disorder and anxiety. Sometimes, substance abuse can cause a change in brain chemistry and trigger a mental health disorder and other times, mental health disorders can trigger someone into misusing substances.

Either way, addressing mental health issues is integral to treating drug and alcohol addiction, which is why professional intervention is often required for long-term recovery.
